CNC High Precision Whirling Machine

A CNC high-precision whirling machine is a dedicated CNC machine tool for machining precision threads, helical raceways, and long-shaft components. Thread profiles are generated through coordinated motion between a high-speed rotating whirling cutter head and a slowly rotating workpiece.

The whirling machine is primarily used for precision transmission components such as ball screws, planetary roller screws, worm shafts, and large-lead screws.

Why Choose the Whirling Process?

For high-precision transmission components such as ball screws and planetary roller screws, the machining challenge goes beyond simply producing a thread. Manufacturers also need to consider stability when machining long shafts, lead consistency, thread profile accuracy, surface finish, and machining efficiency after heat treatment.

Thread whirling can be applied to a range of demanding thread-machining requirements, such as:

  • Long Screw Machining: Well suited to long-shaft workpieces. A center rest, tailstock, and additional workpiece support can be used to help minimize the effects of vibration and deflection during machining.
  • Single- and Multi-Start Threads: Suitable for single-start, multi-start, and certain variable-lead thread geometries.
  • Large-Lead Threads: Compared with conventional thread turning, whirling is better suited to certain threads with large leads and high helix angles.
  • Reduced Grinding Allowance: Where the process permits, whirling provides precise control of the machining allowance, reducing the amount of material that must be removed during subsequent thread grinding.
  • Process Consolidation: Some components can undergo more roughing and semi-finishing operations in a single setup, helping reduce accumulated errors caused by repeated clamping.
  • Dry or MQL Machining: Depending on the workpiece material and tooling, the process can be performed using dry cutting or minimum quantity lubrication (MQL), reducing reliance on large volumes of cutting fluid.

Thread whirling is not a complete replacement for every thread-grinding operation. Components requiring particularly high final accuracy or specific surface-finish requirements may still need subsequent grinding or superfinishing. Therefore, select the appropriate process route based on required accuracy, material hardness, machining cycle time, and production volume.

Applications

CNC high-precision whirling machines are primarily used by manufacturers of ball screws, planetary roller screws, and other precision threaded transmission components. These components are used in applications including:

  • CNC machine tools
  • Industrial robots
  • Robotic actuators
  • Aerospace servo mechanisms
  • Automation equipment
  • New energy vehicle transmission systems
  • High-precision linear motion systems

For manufacturers moving from conventional screw products to high-precision ball screws or planetary roller screws, or looking to shorten thread-machining cycles after heat treatment, thread whirling can serve as an important machining option within a production route that may also include turning, heat treatment, and grinding.
